Gold vermeil, explained — and how to keep it glowing

Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is a thick layer of gold over sterling silver. To be called vermeil in the U.S., the gold must be at least 10 karat and 2.5 microns thick — ours is 18ct, over recycled sterling silver.

Why it lasts

Standard gold plating is often less than half a micron over brass. Vermeil's thicker layer and precious-metal base mean it wears far longer and is kinder to sensitive skin.

Five habits for lasting shine

Put jewelry on last, after perfume and lotion. Take it off before swimming, showering and the gym. Wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing. Store pieces separately in their pouches. And never use jewelry dips or polishing pastes on vermeil.
